Brown's book is very useful for beginners. It has illustrations and general descriptions of the more common grasses. The illustrations of the parts of a grass can be xeroxed and taken with you in the field. You will quickly be looking for more detailed information and more species after using this book.

The other books listed in my post are about the grasses and grass-like plants for individual states and geographic regions. My area of interest is the eastern United States. No matter where you reside, there are books about the grasses of your area. Take the time to become familiar with the more general and basic texts. This will help you significantly when you begin using the more detailed texts.

I would agree. The blackline drawings of the spikelets were what attracted me to the book. This was my very first grass ID book.
