I heard a beautiful song outside my window in a dogwood tree at 6 AM today. I had to grab the binoculars to see what it was. It was an Orchard Oriole! Those guys are not supposed to be here until April 1st at the earliest. I read they are late to come north and early to leave, sometimes as early as July. I don't know what the heck he was thinking, but he's probably not happy to be here.
I've been putting out raisins and cranberries for the bluebirds so maybe he at least got something to eat. Anybody else seeing migrants before their expected time? |

I have seen a red-winged blackbird already. Also the house finch males are getting spring coloration and "singing" already. Here is a link about plants emerging and blooming earlier as well. Invasive plants are beneficiaries of climate change in Thoreau's woods

I noticed a few male goldfinches yesterday with their bright yellow summer coloration as well. Since it's been such a bleak winter it was actually nice to see. I don't think we had a single day of sunshine in all of February.

Ohhh,,, a redwing blackbird and you saw one. That means I'm next for them to start staking out territory. Spring hasn't exactly sprung yet... I'm waiting.
