I took this photo at the Kanaha State Waterbird Sanctuary on Maui. I can't figure out what this bird is. I know it's a shorebird but not much more than that. We're going back to the sanctuary in a couple days before we leave so I'd like to know what it is if anyone can help me out.

No idea, Equilibrium, but you're right, it has that shorebird look (the look that says "I can see you, you little fish...")

Sort of like a crane or Ulili (Wandering Tattler). I don't know just guessing. You are missing the return to single digit temperatures and more snow. Enjoy that sunshine for us...gloria

It looks like an immature heron. This is from the Hawaiian bird list on wikipedia; sorry, the links won't work:
My guess is an immature Black-crowned Night Heron. It's unusual to get a picture with the neck extended like that, but I think that's what it is. It surprises me that Hawaii has about the same herons as we do here. |

I'd be surprised if it's a heron. Surprise me!

There's really nothing else it could be - there have been sightings ("accidental") of Sandhill Cranes in HI, but Eq's picture doesn't look like a crane

I think it is a juvenile night heron.

Gosh, the length of the neck seems so different, Kildale (not that I know a thing about them--I don't).
