Default Ring Necked Pheasant

Had a sweet surprise today. A Ring Necked Pheasant on the deck. Grabbed a few photos before it wandered off. I had never seen one before in the area.

Must have been quite a thrill! Although an introduced species from Asia, it is the state bird of South Dakota. One of those species that one just "accepts" because of its rare beauty and interesting features.

I think I was in my late teens when I first found out that pheasants were introcuced. However, I had no idea it was the state bird of South Dakota! ~sigh~ I find it odd that they didn't pick a bird native to their state.
