Default Bird Flight Elucidated

Today's (4 January 2011) NY Times has an in-depth article (http://www.nytimes.com/2011/01/04/sc...gewanted=1&hpw) on the science of bird flight, including an interesting hypothesis on the origin(s) of flight. It starts out:

"The flying abilities of even the most prosaic bird put airplane maneuvers to shame, and experts here at the University of Montana Flight Laboratory are cognizant of that every day.
“Birds can do some pretty spectacular things,” said Kenneth P. Dial, a biologist who, in 1988, founded the lab at a field station near the University of Montana. “They can go from 40 miles an hour to zero and land on a branch that’s moving, all in a couple of seconds. It’s inspiring.” "

I never thought about bird flight as being so amazing (I guess I just took it for granted, I'm a little ashamed to say). After reading that one quote, I am inspired.

Wow! Philip, thanks for sharing!

I called Jeff over to watch it...I interpreted a little but mostly let him enjoy the cool visuals. He kept commenting, "That is so cool!" Maybe I'll get him addicted to the W.G. like me.
