Where are the kingbirds??

One species that has disappeared in my area, it seems, is the kingbird. I have a special place in my heart for them. I once saw one sitting on the shoulders of a crow pounding its beak in the crow's head while the crow was flying to get away. The kingbird wasn't flying; he was riding, claws set in the crow's shoulders, banging away at the crow's head. It was one of those sights that never leaves one's mind.

Does anyone have resident kingbirds? Any pictures??

We have one that visits our farm pond in central MA quite often for fish. I don't have any pics of him yet. Once I saw him grab something (a fish, I believe) and beat it against a wooden post near the pond...cool guy!

Sounds like you are talking about a kingfisher, not a kingbird.

Jack, I have not really seen any, either. I live at the NJ shore, so we don't usually get them here. But I will ask my sister in NE PA. She usually has them there.

The last time I saw one was fifteen years ago in, as I recall, Central Park, NYC.

Hey, no need! :)

I love kingfishers, too! I have seen them slam a fish against a post before. What an interesting bird! Very graceful and beautiful birds they are.

I usually see one sitting on a raised manhole looking over a pond but come to think of it.... I haven't noticed him this year. Bummer. It's a cool bird.... adds a splash of color to the pond. How long do they live?
