They are here the year round and nest on an island close by.

Hey... stop playing with your subjects. Put the lipstick away and back away from the bird. ;) Just teasing with you. Really nice photo of a bird I've only seen in photographs.

They say they are black birds smoking a carrot.

Oystercatchers are wonderfully goofy looking--nature has a sense of humor. They are fairly common in the salt marshes here. Although they look funny they fly and walk much like any shore bird, and that bill does a great job of pulling things from the mudflats. It is easy to be fond of something so odd looking that it becomes almost cute.

Ha ha ha, black birds smoking a carrot. That bird is so ugly it's cute.

I aways take a few pictures if they happen to be close. They really great each other when they meet.

They never fail to bring a smile to my face.

Another treat. These birds do not grace the shores of Lake Michigan.

Wonderful pictures Kildale.

They look like a cartoon bird.

They do. The first time I saw one I was driving. I burst out laughing when I saw it, and had to turn around to take another good look while pulled over to the side of the road. As soon as I got a good look, I was smitten. I have had a soft spot in my heart for the oystercatcher ever since.
