Default Egg Shells

Good time to put out egg shells or other calcium based items (crab shells, bones) for the birds. They go for calcium to produce the shells for the eggs.

As an alternative, they eat paint, which is less than ideal.

We've been putting out egg shells for a couple of months now. It disappears, but not sure if it is just blowing out of the platforms in the wind. I just baked some I had in the freezer, so that's ready to go out. My last batch of homemade "suet" contained egg shells that I put in the coffee grinder. I used to put in duck feed for added nutrients but I have to wonder... what is in that stuff?

One of my children found a Robin egg shell. It was from a hatching. Already! The little ones found an ant hill and out of curiosity they crumbled up that egg shell. They placed the pieces around the hill to see if the ants would take them. They did. They would exclaim with every piece taken into the hole. The next day, they found a dead bug and put it by the hill. I do not know the results of that. They used to mess up the ant hills, so this is an improvement.

I read an article some years ago about Blue Jays eating paint. Ick.

Paint wouldn't be my first choice, either!
