Killer whales hunt seals by creating waves - Telegraph
"As it perches on a solid block of ice floating on the Antarctic Ocean, this seal should feel safe from predators. What it does not suspect is that it is about to become a victim of a group of killer whales who have developed an extraordinary tactic to catch their prey. The predatory sea mammals work together as a group to create large waves that wash seals off the ice and can even break up larger floes to deliver their quarry. Scientists who have discovered the technique - which has only been seen in killer whales hunting in the pack ice of the Antarctic - say it is so effective that it produces a meal for the whales three out of every four times they use it." "It is also now emerging that the distinctive black and white colouring of killer whales, which makes them easier for prey to spot, may actually help the whales coordinate when they are hunting. It may explain why those that hunt for different prey types have slightly different patterns on their bodies."
