They actually look like Tapinoma sessile (The odorous house ant) and as it turns out they nest opportunistically. Colonies move, merge, and divide as needed; often nesting in tall grasses or hollow cavities in wood.

If they didn't get it up the wall then they likely ate the pieces that rotted away first.
