Matthew Gilg, University of North Florida ecological geneticist and associate professor of biology, said green mussel numbers have greatly diminished in the last couple of years because of colder-than-average temperatures.

“Our last two winters have been cold enough to kill a lot of them,” said Gilg, who received a USDA grant of $370,000 to study the mussels. “Places that I used to find hundreds of them, there are just a handful now.”
